Japan's defining post-war architect. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum (1955), Yoyogi National Gymnasium for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (1991). Mentor to the Metabolist generation (Kurokawa, Maki, Kikutake).
