Carlo Scarpa

Venetian architect whose work lives almost entirely at the scale of a detail — Castelvecchio Museum (Verona, 1973), the Brion Cemetery (San Vito d'Altivole, 1978), Olivetti Showroom (Venice, 1958), Querini Stampalia ground floor (Venice, 1963).

Bronze, Istrian stone, water, concrete shaped by the carpentry of formwork — every junction is detailed as if it were the only one. Frank Lloyd Wright once called him "a man who details a building like a watchmaker".

Died falling down concrete stairs in Sendai. Buried standing upright at Brion, in the cemetery he designed.
