Philip Johnson

Co-author of *The International Style* (1932) and founding head of MoMA's architecture department before turning architect himself with the Glass House (1949). Crossed every twentieth-century stylistic line — late-Mies modernist, the AT&T Building's broken-pediment postmodernism (1984), the Lipstick Building, the late deconstructivist works.

The first Pritzker laureate (1979). His curatorial influence at MoMA — picking Mies, then later Gehry and Eisenman — arguably exceeded his own designs.
