Career

Suggest edit
Finnish architect and designer whose Paimio Sanatorium (1933) and Viipuri Library (1935) gave functionalism a humane, timber-and-light tone distinct from the Bauhaus's metal asceticism. Later works — Säynätsalo Town Hall, the Finlandia Hall — confirmed the warm, Nordic-modern palette he is known for.

Style

Suggest edit
Aalto worked across furniture, glass, and lighting (the Stool 60, the Savoy vase, the A330 pendant) — every Aalto building was furnished by Aalto.

Legacy

Suggest edit
The Finnish Association of Architects' Aalto Medal (1967, awarded periodically) is named for him. Artek, the firm he co-founded with Aino Aalto in 1935, still produces his furniture.
